collections.. pt 3 [the art]

ART= 1. the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.
2. the class of objects subject to aesthetic criteria; works of art collectively, as paintings, sculptures, or drawings: a museum of art; an art collection.

Either way, we collect a whole lot of it. We recently rearranged our whole house, and came to the conclusion we have alot of stuff. Art being one of them. We also plan to move overseas in the very near future. Dilemma. So I took the time to document a little of this art, to share joy, talent and so that wherever we move, we can still appreciate our art. Here is but a few of a babies.

{these duck were hand drawn as a gift from our friend claire for our wedding}
{this tea towel is from third draw down and was a gift from some amazing friends in melbourne}

{this was another wedding gift, the 'token wedding present' was drawn by our friend dave who also drew our newest tattoos}
{this is our newest purchase-it is a collaboration of acorn and ghostpatrol a couple of melbourne artist. I actually just got one of ghostpatrols drawings tattooed on my ribs a month ago. we bought this water colour from tiny showcase, check em out, they're amazing}

{these four are from my uncle, frank, he is an art teacher in france and has an amazing little house an hour out of paris. when I was last there in 2009 he sent me home with a few works. my favourite is the face on wood, she is so beautiful. frank is one of my favourite artists}
{our friend dubsy is about to do some amazing stuff overseas, so his housemates threw him a fundraiser. claire made some memorabilia and some decks for an auction. we ended up with these}
{the deck is some more of claire's work and the man playing guitar is some more of franks}
{my dad recently stated up at art school, he is very modest about painting, but i love his work and he inspires me to be creative}
{these are some cards we bought at finders keepers from courtney brims an very talented brisbane artist}
{kim has always wanted a painting of a ship near our bed so i brought this home from the op-shop one day. i also made the beard face}

enjoy,

embroidery joy!

We have a small addiction, both morgan and i are addicted to making embroideries. It is just so fun.
IMG_0562

We've been meaning to share these with you for a while, but I finally got around to it today as I've been trying to decide what to do for my next hoop. You see Sherry from Oh So Lovely has organised an Embroidery Hoop Art Swap and i'm getting involved. I've been partnered with Ashlee so get to make her a sweet hoop and send it her way and she does the same for me.

Anyway, here a a few of the embroideries morgan and I have each made in the past 3 months. We hope they make you smile.

this is the one that started it all. morgan made it for me.

I made this one for my mum for christmas, morgan made one for his mum too, but we don't have a picture.

morgan made this one for our lovely friends who are getting married. the boy loves drawing tattoos and is working to be a tattoist and the girl is super crafty, so this was a combo of them both.

i made: homemade toothpaste REVIEW

IMG_0596

So.. the other week we made our own homemade toothpaste. This was a first for us and have never made our own body products before, but something that we think we shall try more often. But what I'm sure you all want to know is does the toothpaste work, and is it any good. We used it for a week straight and here is our reviews...

kim's review
This homemade toothpaste has a weird consistency, and the first time you try it, it tastes really bad. But don't let that put you off trying it. This is super cheap and really nice to know what ingredients your using to put on your teeth (I have no idea what's in regular toothpaste). It did seem to whiten the teeth (I guess thats the bi-carb soda) and made my breath smell nice but not very minty. You feel fresh after using it, but yeah not the minty fresh after using regular stuff. It's the type of thing I think I'm going to use every now and then. I'm not sure if that covers it, but if you have any questions just ask!

Another toothpaste I would recommend which Morgan and I use regularly is Grant's Herbal and Mineral Toothpaste with Aloe Vera. This is just a bunch of herbs mixed together and feels like your using regular toothpaste, minty fresh and all. We buy it from our local grocery store for $2.50 which is pretty sweet. The ingredients include extract of Cardamon, Carraway, Celery, Coriander, Rosemary, Sage, Thyme, Dill, Eucalyptus and Mint. We found this gem by looking it up on the Ethical Shopping Guide app.

grants natural toothpaste

morgan's review
Honestly, because I'd rather you weren't led astray by my words. This 'toothpaste' tastes horrible! Just like washing your mouth out with salt and a dash of mint. Sure, your teeth will feel super slick and shiny clean after, but if you scrubbed your teeth with salt of course they would get clean. I highly recommend Grants tooth paste- organic, natural goodness.

i made: homemade toothpaste

IMG_0596

So... a little while ago a lovely friend of mine went to visit his family in America and returned home with a little gift for me. He brought me "The Big Ass Book of Crafts" by Mark Montano. Its such a sweet book with heaps of great ideas of stuff to make. One thing that intrigued me most was a recipe for homemade toothpaste, so i gave it a go, and I thought I would share it with you all.

IMG_0599
So what your going to need is...
- 1 lime to zest
- 1 cup of baking soda (Bi-Carb Soda)
- 20 drops of mint oil
- Zester (tiny grater)
- Jar

IMG_0602

It's really simple.
First zest/grate the lime rind, then let it dry for 2 hours.
Next put all the ingredients into the jar and shake well. You have made toothpaste.
To use, just dip your toothbrush into the powder and brush away (I like to give it a little water first).

NOTE: If you want the lime zest to be real fine, leave overnight and grind in a mortar and pestle.

I'll be back soon with my review after using this toothpaste for a week.

we love our friends

Well, of course we would love our friends, that's what makes them...our friends. But we have a few friends who do some pretty amazing things.

dubs

this is Dubsy
Last night I spoke with one of our friend Dubsy who in two weeks is going over to cambodia to give out skate boards to kids as part of the 360 project

IMG_4799

this is Derek
Our good friend Derek has dropped the sweet life in Michigan to help a sweet skate shop and just got back from going to all 56 Skate parks in Tasmania, cleaning them up and hanging with the locals, giving out bibles and having fun. He also joins us on our adventures and was a leader on a camp I directed at the start of the year.
French Indian Sailor

He is a freakishly talented photographer too, check his stuff out here

this is Claire
Our little british friend Claire is one of our favourite artists. She is super talented and has a sweet heart, she too helps run the skate shop but on the side is a freak with a marker!
she drew and made these decks

Our friend Andy is saving money to go back to Hawaii to do more Surfing the Nations where he will serve the community, feed the hungry and help run surf competitions.
Kims sister and brother are chaplains in two different high schools in our area and help so many kids every day.
Our friend Dani just got back from Togo where she helped in orphanages and helped to provided much needed clean drinking water and medical supplies. She did this through YWAM

This is but a few stories of people we are friends with, there are countless other, people who might not travel the world but maybe study creative writing, make short films or do midwifery. I write this not to boast on how amazing MY friends are but, how AMAZING are these people, and how blessed we are to know them.
Let the people you admire know that you admire them. Spend time learning from them and enjoy there company. And if anything, learn to follow your dreams (as corny and lame as it sounds) because if you are not doing something you love and are passionate about, then you are wasting. your. life.
