Printemps

IMG_3959

Spring is here and in what seems to be overnight, the garden is changing. Each day we notice a new thing. Today one of the cherry trees started to blossom. In Australia it is hard to notice the change in the seasons, each month is quite similar. One of our favourite things about being here is being able to feel and see the transforming for plants and our surroundings. The temperature is rising and so are our habits. We are spending more time outside, making the most of this short burst of colour.

Lacoste & Bonnieux

IMG_3834

This afternoon we went out again on a little adventure to visit the villages of Lacoste & Bonnieux. Its so great to be able to hop in the car and explore these beautiful neighbouring areas. It's days like today where I am completely blown away by all the beautiful things I have been able to see around the world, and how lucky we are to be able to live here. This is really such a great part of the world.

Fontain de Vaucluse

IMG_3785

Yesterday we took our lovely little car for a drive to one of my favourite areas in the south of France, Fountain de Vaucluse. This small town is entered by driving under a huge old aquaduct then follows a beautiful emerald green river to a natural spring situated at the foot of a cliff. Many deep sea divers have explored the source of this green water and yet there is still a mystery to it. Even Jacques Cousteau the famous french diver went down nearly 300 meters and came up scratching his head. Although yesterday due to a dry winter it was pretty dry it was to nice to walk along the flowing river I frequented every visit to France as a child it sure was nice to share this area with my best friend.

Spain: a review

IMG_3704copy

With a total of 10 days in 3 cities through out Spain, we has a whirlwind of a trip. We walked a lot of ground, eat a lot of different things, saw a heap of beautiful places and had great fun along the way. Here are some of our favourite things we did in Spain.

SPAIN1

Favourite thing to do
M:
The best thing for me was getting a new tattoo by one of my previous artists, Sento, in his home studio.
K: We did heaps of great things, but the thing that takes the cake for me was a little date we had at a cafe in Madrid that has been open since 1894. Chocolatería San Ginés lived up to their fame with an epic chocolate con churros and I wish we went back again for some more. Delicious!

SPAIN5

Favourite monument
M:
In Madrid we went to the Reina Sofia which had a lot of nice art and was an incredible building to walk around at night time. We went after 7pm and got free entry.
K: The Sagrada Familia in Barcelona was enormous and beautiful. You have to pay 13€ to go inside however, which we didn't do, but walking around was magical enough for me.

SPAIN6

Favourite meal
M:
We went to a small cafe in Valencia and had Octopus tentacles done with Patatas Bravas and Spanish Tortilla. It was incredible.
K: I love rice, so for me the best meal we had was the Paella we had at La Pepica. This place is apparently frequented by the king of Spain, but they also have a photo of another more important customer for me, Mr Ernest Hemingway.

SPAIN3

Favourite tapas bar
M:
La Comisaria in Valencia had an amazing atmosphere and it was great to see a chef working in a professional and creative way, in a 1m x 1m kitchen. Two of the menu highlights were Pork cheek and Crayfish Chupa Chups.
K: On our last night in Barcelona we went to a great Tapas bar that was suggested to us by a couple of people. The food at Quimmet & Quimmet was so creative and delicious and affordable too.

SPAIN4

Favourite region
M:
The el Gothic region in Barcelona is a magical little district filled with cobbled street only accessible by foot filled with small independent stores, cafes and few museums. Easy to get lost in and well worth the visit.
K: One of my favourite memories was ride bikes through the parks to Malvarrosa beach. It was such a nice day and the weather was perfect. Definitely my favourite area of Valencia. We rode our bikes to the beach through a park that has been built in the cities ancient river bed.

SPAIN2

Tips to know before you go...
- Shops close between 2 and 5pm, so make some plans for this time of the day.
- Be aware of hidden costs. You will get charged less if you stand and eat or drink at the bar.
- Restaurants open at approx. 1pm for lunch and 9.30pm for dinner, if its open before then, its there for tourists.
- This is a country that stays up late and sleeps in.

Barcelona

IMG_3724

Well, our Spainish/Portugese adventure is over, but before we get all nostalgic I want to share a little about a final destination, Barcelona.

We had a great 5 days in Barcelona, catching up with an Australian friend who is studying there and exploring the city. It was nice to have a few extra days and take it slower and observe the Spanish ritual of "siesta". We saw the works of Gaudi (which didn't impress Morgan at all), ate more Maoz, napped in the park, had the best tapas in our lives and got sunburnt. It was a great way to end our little getaway.

Ohh and we stumbled upon a random festival march through Parc Guell where hundreds of students, parents and teachers marched banging drums with some people marching inside 10ft statues. The last picture below was from this event.
enjoy.

Valencia

Well this morning we are packing up and on the move again, as we leave Valencia and head to Barcelona. We have had a great few days here. Valencia is such a beautiful city and nice and small so you can walk or ride bike and get around very easy. We have seen the old city ruins, the big cathedral, the beautiful markets, rode bikes along the beach front, strolled through the park, admired all the street art and spent time with our favourite tattoo artist Sento.

Throughout all our travels we have been using airbnb for bits of our accommodation, and these past few days we have been staying with a couple of great hosts. Last night they took us out to a couple of amazing tapas bars and had us finally go to bed at the regular Spanish bedtime. 2-3am! This trip we have stayed in a variety of accommodations, but staying with a couple of young locals has been super fun.

Madrid

IMG_3517
Our time in this big city has been short but sweet. Like hanging out with a friend of a friend that you didn't know and didn't think you'd like but ending up finding some cool things about them. We had just over 2 days here, but made the most of it. Highlights- walking in to a stangers studio space to have her give us a list of things to do, an invite to her birthday party and a kiss goodbye. Eating chorizo. Eating churros con chocolate for breakfast. Visiting the Renia Sofia museum for free at night. Admiring little shops and lots of street art. And as always, strolling through old streets. Next stop, Valencia. We are pretty excited for we are staying with an airbnb.com host. It will be nice to have a locals knowledge, especially for our hunt for perfect paella.
