When I was given the Leica camera I was given a pile of film and most of it was expired. I decided to give a roll a go and big surprise, it did effect the quality. The photos turned out grainy and really lack in giving shadow and depth. But some people are into grainy shots, so here's to you. These shots are taking throughout Eastern Europe at the end of last year. Not sure if I will use the rest of these expired rolls, so if you want some, let me know.
So this is my first roll of film developed from one of my favourite new cameras, my Leica M6.
It has taken me a while to get used to this camera, with its separate lens/viewfinder and getting used to using a light meter is has been a challenge. This was a cheap roll of film but picks up some serious colour. These photos were taken throughout Germany and Vienna in November of last year. I really miss Autumn, especially now we are living in an area of Australia that has no real change in seasons.
Well we didn't plan on taking a little pause on the blog, but life happens and so did the break. This month has been a roller coaster for Morgan and I. We moved into our new place, after 13 months of living with others and in hotels and hostels, and settled into life in a new city. It has be so lovely to have our own space again and to start afresh. We have both been so excited to have a kitchen and have been loving having guests over so we can create lots of treats to eat. Its incredible the simple things you miss when you don't have your own home. We have been blown away by the kindness of our family and friends and are so refreshed to have these people back in our lives again.
Its funny to think that at times this move coming back to Australia seems crazier and more challenging that what we did packing up and heading to Europe. We really didn't know what we were going to do getting back here until we got the lease approved to move into our apartment. Morgan has picked up a great job with great hours and I am still on the hunt, but things have been falling into place that we have no doubt we are where we are meant to be.
In terms of this blog, we want to keep going. This was never a travel blog, but as we began moving around all the time, the blog followed in that direction too. We don't really know what our lives are going to look like this year, but I am sure that no matter what happens the blog will follow along for the ride.
Thank you so much to everyone who has been reading. As always it is a real privilege to have people read along and interact and share the journey with us.
We will be back soon with much more.

Last year was a massive year for us, and it has been so so fun to be able to share it with you all here on the blog. Here are a few facts and figures about how we spent 2012.

362 = days spent outside of Australia
46 = number of beds slept in around the world
16 = cities/villages we stayed in France
15,000 = estimate amount of AU$ we spent while away

We never would have of guessed what 2012 would have been like. Had we have known what was in store, maybe we would not have done it all, but we have absolutely no regrets. We have made so many new friends this year and had so many incredible encounters. As we look back, we are often overwhelmed at how amazing life can be. We are so pumped for 2013 and have even more unknown expectations as to what will come in the year ahead, but what ever it is, it is sure to be great.
Kim and I have been keeping a big secret for a while and now that everyone knows we can blog about it. We have decided to move back to Australia! What originally set out to be a holiday back home for Christmas has changed into a new beginning. Whilst looking at rental prices we found an amazing old unit in Brisbane that an old friend used to have, it's such a beauty that it was too hard not to apply for it. And once we got approved for it we decided we needed a car. After a lot of research and encouragement from other bloggers who have bought the same car we decided to buy the most expensive car we ever had, a Prius. We are so excited to save fuel on the hybrid vehicle and do our bit to save the environment. This is about as much of what we know the future holds for us, we will be looking for work in the big city and getting settled in. We are so excited to be home and had a lot of fun surprising friends and family the past few days. HUGS ALL ROUND. Where the blog is going to go from now.... Who knows, but sit tight.
To all who have taken a moment to read this, Merry Christmas, please stay safe and we pray you find joy, peace and love this Christmas.
After 7 days here in Istanbul (not including the 2 we had before we went to Olympos) we figure its time to share some of our experiences of the city so far. Since our first day we arrived and had our coffees paid for by a random old man in a little coffee house, we have been overwhelmed by the beauty and kindness of the Turkish people. Istanbul is a massive city with 13.5 million people (there is 22 million in all of Australia!) so there is always something going on. The city is spread over 2 continents, Europe and Asia, and most of our time has been spent on the Europe side.
We have enjoyed the change in culture, from waking up at 5.30am to the first light call to prayer from the Mosque next door to haggling with vendors everywhere, but especially the change in food. We have made good use of the street side food venders enjoying bagels, fresh squeezed orange and pomegranate juice, rice, honey churos, corn and doner kebabs all for 1 or 2 lira (50c-$1). I have loved the tea culture and the beautiful rituals of drinking tea throughout the day, once even served tea in the park. Morgan's mustache is always a favourite with the men on the streets who stop to comment or laugh and point as we walk on past. Today the men yelled out "famous man" as we passed a shop near our hotel which we pass most days.
We have explored the bazaar's and flea markets, rode the ferry to the princes' islands, admired the beautiful tiles and architecture, and taken so many photos on film.

We have had a few people ask if we will have a new Christmas mix out again this year, but unfortunately because our computer is still broken we can't make one. However, that doesn't mean you don't get to have any new Christmas music this year... Sufjan Stevens has put out a great new Christmas album "Silver and Gold" which is just $15 for 59 beautiful tracks. If that isn't a Christmas bargain, I don't know what is. On the blogging front, Cesar has a new traditional mix out this year and so do the Gallo's, so check those two out.
Also if you are new around here, you can download our last two Christmas mixtapes here and here.
Only two weeks to go, so get your Christmas music pumping! Kim has been at it since October.
It's a long 15 hour bus drive to get from Istanbul to Olympos, but it was well worth the journey. Olympos is an old ancient city (now in ruins dated from around 7AD) on the Mediterranean Sea in the south of Turkey, which has become a getaway for Turkish tourists. There is maybe 20 wooden treehut style hostels set up just outside the ruins, an area which is very busy in summer, but beautiful and quiet at this time of the year. We had a relaxing 5 days climbing mountains, exploring the ruins, reading books, playing backgammon and even swam in the sea. It's a beautiful area with lots of natural delights. We visited Yanartaş, a natural phenomenon of flames burning out of gaps in the rocks, and were blessed to share a BBQ sausage with a Turkish family cooking lunch on the ancient eternal flames. Now we are back in Istanbul, and ready to explore the city side of Turkey.

Well, we now take a break from a current series of our Eastern European adventure, to bring you a story. This is the story of how I learnt to knit. You see when we left Australia last year, one of the things I wanted to achieve for 2012 was to learn to knit. Before we head off to Spain and Portugal back in Feburary, Morgan's grandmother got me started and tought me the basics. As we took our trains around these countries I got knitting and maybe finished about 15cm. I was very slow, and the scarf is VERY wide.
As we have moved around France, I have been knitting along the way with my skinny wool and tiny needles. I was knitting many a night in the Biarritz Surf Hostel kitchen (hence my name as mother of the house), while we were woofing, on the vineyard, all over the country. As the cooler weather was approaching I felt a greater sense of urgency to finish the scarf for Morgan in time for winter. Our time in Bad Berneck was the perfect conditions for me to finish that damn scarf, nearly 9 months later. It's been such an epic journey and I can't believe it is finished.

Our time here in Bulgaria has been a very different journey than we are used to. We have had a few extra days in both Sofia and here in Plovdiv than we usually allow in a city and these places are very small in comparison to other cities. Plovdiv has a rich history as a passage for the Ottoman and Roman Empires. In the middle of the Main Street there is ancient roman amphitheater ruins and amazing old building facades. We have had a kebab a day in preparation for Turkey and enjoyed taking our time exploring both the new and old city. The weather has warmed up, we have gone out without scarves for the first time in 2 months and are very excited to get to Turkey tomorrow after a long evening bus trip.

Who would have thought that Bulgaria would be the country where we meet the most Australians around the world. We have had a lovely time meeting new people (most of who are Australian) here in Sofia and exploring the city with them. We are staying at a great hostel which is super cheap and gives us breakfast and dinner so our days cost about $10 for the two of us. Most people at the hostel are either going to or coming from Istanbul, so we have been getting very excited about Turkey. Most people are also only staying 1 or 2 days so our 5 days here has enabled us to catch up on skype chats and take it slow.
This city is nice and compact, so it is super easy to get around on foot, although the crazy footpaths can make it an adventure. We have had some amazing dirt cheap food, and are making up for all the meat and carbs we have had elsewhere, with some decent vegetables.
The markets here are fun to explore. One find, which you camera buffs might enjoy, was a special Nazi edition Gold Leica camera. We nearly bought a mini accordion for $20, but decided we didnt want to carry it. Our bags are bulging enough as it is. Tomorrow we head to a smaller town 2 hours from here called Plovdiv.

Well once again we are down to our last 24 hours in a city. Tomorrow night we catch another night train to Sofia, Bulgaria. Our last night train was pretty good, we got a whole compartment to ourselves and were able to sleep a little too. Arriving in a city at 6am is always a strange first impression, but since that first walk across town to find our airbnb apartment, to now, we have enjoyed exploring Belgrade. It isn't the most beautiful city, but there is so much to been seen in the grey communist style buildings with beautiful architecture spattered in between.
Things here are cheap (for us) and we have appreciated the large meals and low costs. We even went to the cinemas the other night to see Argo (great film!) and it only cost us $2.50. The Danube river continues through Belgrade and we are fortunate our place is realy close to the Kalamegdan Park and Belgrade Fortress, which has a great view of the river. There are plenty of street vendors selling a little bit of everything. We picked up a 500 billion Yugoslav dinar from the hyper inflation of 1994. The sweet old lady who sold us this said "Makes super souvenir. Easy to carry and very cool", and upon purchase said "thankyou very much Mr Bill Gates". Amazing.

It is slightly insane how fast our time is flying by in each of these countries. Budapest has been a lovely city, and we have enjoyed our airbnb apartment so much, as a space to rest and recouperate each day. We were surprised to find a great little coffee scene going on here in Budapest, and went to visit a new one everyday (some getting a second visit we loved them so much) with the help of Beanhunter. Hungary is very cheap place to eat and explore so yesterday we treated ourselves with a visit to a thermal bath and a massage. It was so nice to float around in the thermal water and reflect on our time so far. Once again we have enjoyed the delights of the Danube river, trying lots of new foods, exploring flea markets and we did another little free walking tour. Tonight we catch our first of many night trains to Serbia and we are excited to see what we will find there.
-kim

Wien, as its called round these parts is a beauty. We have fallen in love with this city very quickly. With its historic buildings, beautiful parks, street art, coffee houses and over all vintage feel this place is well worth a visit. Tomorrow we head to Budapest, and as excited as we are, our time was not long enough here in Vienna. One highlight - obviously the coffee houses with their Art Deco interiors which haven't changed a bit since they opened. We were lucky enough to be around on a Saturday and our favorite thing to do is visit the flea markets. Kim fulfilled her dream of owning a nutcracker and we bought some lovely books for our train trips ahead. Although we have not eaten traditionally, we have found some little gems of restaurants. Everything from wood fired pitas, Europes best falafel, sushi and a face sized schnitzel. Once again, sorry about the poor quality photos (still working on the Brocken laptop) but feel free to follow us "morganandkim" on Instagram.

Wow. It is a lot harder than we thought blogging without a computer. Sorry about that. Well we have had a delightful 7 days here in Prague, and tomorrow we head to Vienna. We came here with my parents, and then left after a few days to go back to Germany. We have had a great time strolling the old cobbled streets, admiring the architecture and trying to avoid the hundreds of tourists. We have done the things you are supposed to do... Visit Prague Castle, walk the Charles Bridge, see the astronomical clock and the Lennon wall. These have been great, although some of our favorite things have been climbing the hill to see the view from Letna Park, this great little cafe near our hotel, and just sitting by the Vltava River all rugged up and watching the world go by. It certainly feels like winter is here, and we are loving the change in season and the subsequent change in our wardrobe.
We are off again and starting the next stage of our year. Its pretty hard to stay still in Europe, with so many exciting and interesting places in such a close proximity, so we aren't. Today we head to Prague and begin a 2 month train trip through Eastern Europe. We will be heading through Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria, and ending in Turkey. Above is a little map of our travels from when we left Paris in mid September, to the end of December. Not yet sure what we will do next year, but Turkey seems to be a lovely place to escape for winter.
Yesterday we woke up to a winter wonderland and a village covered in white. Snow is such a thrill for us and we are loving all the excitement of this season. These next few days we plan on drinking red wine, walking in the snowing woods, listening to Christmas music and maybe a few films.
In other news, we are having some issues with our laptop so until we get that sorted our blog posts from now on might only be iPhone photos. We'll just have to see what happens.
This week we had a great 4 day trip, driving down to Austria and Italy with my parents. Hopefully we can share some of our photos from our other Cameras soon.

So a while back when we were in Alsace, Kim and I visited a concentration camp in which my grandpa was held prisoner during WW2. Thankfully, he escaped.
I am not sure what to write, how horrible the war was, how we need to stop things like this happening in the future or how atrocious it is that they make you pay to visit a concentration camp! I write this from Germany, in a small Bavarian town, about to eat brotwurst, sauerkraut and potatoes. This is my first time in Germany, and to be completley honest I didn't think I'd like it this much. I thought to myself that the people would all be hard, angry, not funny and that Natzis would still walk the streets. Not really, but predujice and spending 10 months in France with older people has painted a distorted picture of Germans.
My mother is currently doing a one woman show retracing her fathers journey through war, concentration camp, survival and finally in escape. During the writing process she interviewed immigrants in Australia who moved there after the war. French, Polish, Italians and a German, all who fought in the war. I think something we fail to remember in most war situations is that often both sides fighting don't actually want to be there. My mother sat with this old German man as he said he was just following orders as a young man.
Going to the concentration camp was horrible experience, seeing buildings that were made with the sole purpose of humiliating, torturing and killing people. We sat back and said "good thing times have changed', but has it? People still get tortured, people still fight wars, people are still racist and young men and women are still recruited to fight because its an honorable thing to do. I am not trying to make points, I have not truly lived through a war. I was able to hold my Grandpa and tell him his long beard was itchy, I am able to rest my head on a bed, with a full stomach, without fear of bombs, guns or my families safety. Just something to think about next "day of remembrance" I guess.

It has been so lovely chilling out and enjoying what Germany has to offer. My parents arrived on Monday and we have had a great time catching up on the last 10 months. Yesterday we went for a little drive out to Bamberg and on our way back popped in to see the Plassenburg Castle in Kulmbach. It is amazing to find the little differences in German culture after spending so many months exploring French cities.

A lovely couple have generously lent us an apartment in the small town of Bad Berneck, Germany. For the next 2-3 weeks we will be relaxing here soaking in the colour of autumn, eating german sausages, trying out the local beers and have a special two week visit from Kims parents!

Good friends of ours started production on a Documentary just as we left Australia at the end of last year. We have both been hanging out all year waiting to see the finished piece. Well the wait is over and we are so proud of our talented friends.
This documentary follows a group of young surfers heading overseas on a surf trip/life changing look at poverty. If you have a spare 30 mins please watch it.

Well we have hit the halfway mark of our job here in Alsace. We have made so many friends from so many areas around the world. We have eaten so many potatoes and traditional hearty dishes from the area that it becomes quite hard to get back into the rhythm of work in the afternoon. Yesterday we had a day off and visited Struthoff, a concentration camp not far from here, but more on that later. Life here is pretty good, the view is always amazing, the wine at night is last years harvest of the grapes we pick in the day and the conversations are a plenty. It's going to be hard to leave at the end of the week, but we have an exciting adventure in Eastern Europe to look forward to. So for now we will continue working hard and eating even harder.

This really is wine country and we are surrounded by vineyards left and right. The work is hard, yet rewarding and we are so very grateful we have a nice big comfortable bed at the end of each day. There is always an abundance of wine on the table and a wide variety of Alsacien traditional dishes at each meal. Needless to say, we are loving our 2 week "job". Hope to keep you updated as we venture out, but days off and internet are rare, but we will try our best.

Well, we are back in Paris for the week after a lovely long weekend in London. We caught up with an old friend from Australia and together we all discovered new parts of this huge city together. It has been such a joy to spend time with my two Uncles (on both my mother and fathers side) hearing stories from the past and catching up on what is new. This is the first time Morgan has met my family living in England, and it has been so great introducing him. We have eaten many traditional English delights like strawberries, pork pies and drinking a pint of warm beer.
