the french alps

So on Thursday we made the 450Km journey to The Alpes! About one hour into our journey our battery died. We waited two hours until someone had jumper leads. A very long and amazing story short... We pushed started the car with the help of 5 people at different points in the journey, we bought jumper leads and got help from 10 people at different times and 13 hours later, 1900 meters above sea level, with no address of where we were sleeping that night saw some familiar faces waving from their chalet balcony. Needless to say we were so happy to be with people we know in such an amazing place. i'll let the photos do the talking.

what a week!

It has been quite a roller-coaster week for us. Our last post proved a little hopeful and things didn't turn out quite as we had expected. Our friend had an accident on a motorbike which meant he wasn't able to install the new engine for us. We were stuck in Biarritz for 5 days until the neighbour from the farm we were working on came to our rescue and fixed our car for us. What a legend! On Thursday we were able to hit the road and start our way back to Avignon. It was a long drive but the car worked a treat and we are so happy to have our car back again. We are now back in the Provence and there is Lavender and Cicadas chirping everywhere. It is nice to be back.

San Sebastián

We got given the day off on Wednesday so we took the opportunity to jump in the car and check out San Sebastián. It is pretty funny driving to another country for lunch, and it made for a great little adventure. One of the guys from the hostel came along with us and we had a great time strolling the streets and trying our best to remember how to read and speak Spanish. It was a great little day out.

Toulouse

We have arrived and settled into Biarritz working at the surf hostel. On our way through to Biarritz we stopped for a night in Toulouse to give the car a little rest and visit our friend, Florian. We only had a few hours to explore, but Toulouse is such a beautiful city. When we head East again in July we hope to stop there again and see a bit more.

time for an adventure

After working a month in a hotel worse than Fawlty Towers, Kim and I are very excited to use our hard earned extra fuel money and take our little car on a bit of a road trip.
At some point in the next 4 days we will be leaving for Biarritz, a seaside city in South-Weatern France 12km from the border of Spain. We will be staying with and helping out an Australian family at their Surf Hostel for a month. We are super excited about this new venture and excited to see what the future holds. This is the biggest trip Kim and I have ever done in a car, and we are part excited and part scared our car doesn't make it. We will be stopping overnight in the southern town of Toulouse to visit a French school friend of mine. We will also be volunteering on some organic farms over summer in the Pyrenees through an organisation called WWOOF (willing workers on organic farms) which we are very stoked to get into farming, learning and eating fresh organic goods straight from the fields.
Needless to say we have quite a lot planned for the next few months and yet are completely unsure and excited about our future.

diy letter cushions

Since we arrived in France I have been slowly gathering sewing materials to create things again. This week I picked up some fabric for €1 a meter, so I could finally make these letter cushions I have been wanting to create. They are really easy to make, so you can make some too.


You will need: some fabric, stuffing, pins, scissors and something to sow with. I don't like the cost of buying stuffing brand new, and so I picked up a teddy bear from an op shop and recycled the stuffing from that.


Cut out a template in the shape of the letters you want to create and pin them onto the fabric. Cut out the letters. You want to have the fabric with the wrong sides together, because when you sew them you will be exposing the raw edges. This means the shape of the letters is more defined, and I quite like the way it looks.


Sew around the edge of the shapes, leaving an opening for the stuffing to go in. Once it has been filled with stuffing, sow up the opening, and you are done. If you get a chance to try this please let me know, I would love to see what you create.

Lacoste & Bonnieux

This afternoon we went out again on a little adventure to visit the villages of Lacoste & Bonnieux. Its so great to be able to hop in the car and explore these beautiful neighbouring areas. It's days like today where I am completely blown away by all the beautiful things I have been able to see around the world, and how lucky we are to be able to live here. This is really such a great part of the world.

4L

This is our new car. She is beautiful. She has been one of the most popular French cars over time. She is a Renault 4 or better known as a 4L, pronounced "qatre-elle" (four-L). She is a four speed little gem with many great little features. Most older french people have owned one or at the least have been in one. Most say they are indestructible. We love this car so much and can't wait to have many road trips in her.
